Within Sully’s situation, we observe a unique set of principles relative to Step 4: Build Midcourse Corrections. I call these The Four Core Corrections. Let’s identify and unpack them.

1. Intersect the issue. Sully knew what happened when the aircraft hit the birds. Technically, he could have distanced himself from the issue at hand, but instead he intersected it. For the first time that day, the captain took control of the plane. “My aircraft,” Sully said. “Your aircraft,” said the first officer.20 And with those two words, Sully took responsibility for the situation.

2. Correct the problem. Sully didn’t take a poll. He didn’t even let air traffic control shape his split second thinking. Time was of the essence and only he understood the severity of the situation. Rather than trying to reroute to another airport, he knew his decreasing altitude demanded an immediate midcourse correction.

3. Protect the goal. Captain Sully never lost sight of the goal. In times of crisis, many people change the goal instead of changing the plan. Thankfully, Sully didn’t. Instead, he changed the plan and protected the goal by landing safely and saving everyone on board.

4. Reflect the outcome. Captain Sully reflected the intended outcome to his co-pilot and crew. He embodied a perfect landing because he knew he could do it. He depicted a calm but strong resolve, never projecting fear or incompetence. And upon landing safely, like all good leaders, he reflected upon the outcome.
